Manual Handling Policy

Planning and Procedure

Before lifting anything:

  • Plan the task carefully: what you are lifting, where it will go, the distance, and your route.
  • Only lift if you have been trained in the correct techniques.
  • Make sure you are physically capable — pregnant individuals or those with health problems are at higher risk.
  • Assess the load: size, weight, and centre of gravity. Ensure you can grip it firmly and see your path.
  • Remove unnecessary packaging and reduce load size where possible.
  • Use assistance or equipment (e.g., a trolley) for heavy or awkward loads.
  • If lifting as a team, agree on who leads and give clear instructions.
  • Clear your route of obstacles, check lighting, and look for hazards like uneven or slippery floors.
  • Use PPE if required and make sure it fits and is in good condition.
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
  • Plan rest points for long or heavy lifts.

Positioning

  • Stand in front of the load with feet apart and weight evenly distributed.
  • Keep the heaviest part of the load close to your body.
  • Move closer to the load instead of twisting your body.

Lifting Technique

  • Bend your knees and keep your back straight.
  • Tuck your chin in while lowering.
  • Lean slightly forward if needed and secure a firm grip.
  • Keep shoulders level, avoid twisting, and grip the base of the load.
  • Lift smoothly to waist height.

Moving the Load

  • Move your feet, keeping the load close to your body.
  • Ensure you can see your path.
  • Lower the load slowly, avoiding crushing fingers or toes.
  • Ensure the load is stable and secure when set down.
  • Report any injuries or issues immediately.

Task Tips

  • Keep loads close to your body; avoid lifting at arm’s length.
  • Avoid stooping, reaching, or twisting.
  • Limit lifting from the floor or above shoulder height.
  • Minimise repetitive actions and include adequate breaks.
  • Use teamwork for heavy or awkward loads.

Environment

  • Ensure flooring is even and non-slip.
  • Check lighting and temperature.
  • Remove obstacles and have the correct equipment available.

Lifting Children

  • Children move, so lifting them differs from objects.
  • Use correct lifting techniques but stop if the child struggles; place them safely and calm them before continuing.
  • Encourage the child to hold onto you for support.

Toys, Equipment, and Resources

  • All toys and equipment must be safe and meet regulations.
  • Maintain, clean, and discard worn or damaged items.
  • Furniture must be suitable for children; staff must have adult-sized chairs available.
  • Report unsafe or damaged equipment immediately.

Electrical Appliances

  • All electrical appliances must be maintained and checked according to nursery procedures.
