Policy for Premises and Security

Baby room

  • Ensure that the fire exit is unobstructed at all times
  • Do not put babies to sit or sleep in direct sunlight.
  • After using an electrical socket make sure that the safety cover is inserted.
  • Wherever possible put crawling/walking babies in a cot to sleep.
  • Do not take mugs of hot liquid into the room.
  • Ensure that bottles brought into the room are labelled with the babies’ names.
  • Never give to babies food, bottles or dummies that are not their own.

Baby changing area

  • Never leave the baby unattended on the changing mat.
  • Ensure that nappies, creams, etc. used on a baby come only from its own basket.
  • Put soiled nappies in the nappy bags and tie securely before placing in the bin.
  • Spray the changing mat with disinfectant cleaner and wipe dry after every nappy change.
  • Wash your hands after every nappy change.

Toilet area

  • Do not allow children to play with the toilets.
  • Insist that children wash their hands after using the toilet.
  • If you have assisted with bottom wiping ensure that you use disposable gloves and wash your hands after.
  • If the floor gets wet it must be mopped dry to prevent slipping.

Toilets are not crowded by limiting the number of children as much as possible.

Classroom

  • Ensure that the fire exit is unobstructed at all times.
  • Always make sure that the children are accompanied.
  • Never let the children play on equipment, with cars or other moveable toys without supervision.
  • Always sweep up sand as soon as possible after spillage to prevent accidents caused by slipping.
  • Always mop up water spilled when playing with water.
  • After using an electrical socket, make sure the safety cover is inserted.

Stairs

  • Make sure that all stairs are free of clutter at all times.
  • Always make sure that the children are accompanied.
  • When children climb the stairs up children have to hold onto the rail – children must not gather at the top of the stairs but are encouraged to move forward.
  • When children go down the stairs- adult must go in front of them and remind to hold onto the rail.

Kitchen 

  • Never allow children into the room.
  • Always sterilize bottles as instructed.
  • Use only boiled water for making up bottles and baby drinks/feeds.
  • Make food and bottles in the manner instructed.
  • Store any leftover food in the fridge.
  • Operate the electrical equipment in the manner instructed.

Outside play area

  • Always check the environment is safe for the children, i.e. free of glass, nettles, etc.
  • Always make sure the gate is locked.
  • Ensure that children are supervised at all times.

General

  • Never allow any person you do not know to take a child away. Always check with the officer in charge to ensure that that person is an authorized collector.
  • Never allow children to go outside unaccompanied.
  • If any accidents result in injury to staff or children, they must be recorded in the accident book which is in the Office.
  • Any medicine given to any child must first be authorized by their parents and recorded in the medicine form.
  • The use of bad language within the nursery premises is absolutely forbidden.
  • Smoking on nursery premises is absolutely forbidden.

Staff should indicate in writing on the premises check form:

  • The date
  • Comments they have made
  • Action recommended
  • Action taken
  • Management response
